How to create an engaging workplace through employee experience
Do the people at your organisation leap out of bed in the morning, excited about what the workday will bring? A fulfilling, engaging workplace culture plays a massive role in fostering that sense of enthusiasm. When employees feel connected, valued, and fulfilled at work, it has a ripple effect on both individual satisfaction and organisational performance. Great workplace cultures are ones where people genuinely enjoy coming to work - not dread it or merely tolerate it.
Helping businesses create this kind of culture is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. By consciously crafting a workplace where people thrive and engage with purpose, organisations unlock their teams' best potential.
The good news? Building an engaging and aligned workplace culture is not just an ideal—it’s very achievable with the right focus, strategy, and intentionality.
Great culture starts with great people
Here’s a secret about great workplace cultures - they don’t just “happen.” They are the result of careful planning and intentional strategies. Great people create great cultures, and ensuring you attract and retain those people begins with asking the right questions.
Before asking, "Who do we want or need to create a thriving organisation?" consider this instead, "Why would they want to work for us?" This is the starting point for every successful employee value proposition (EVP).
What is an EVP?
An employee value proposition answers the critical WIIFM question, "What’s in it for me?" It’s your promise as an employer regarding what employees can expect in return for their skills, time, and commitment. While an EVP includes financial factors like salary and benefits, these only scratch the surface.
A deep and meaningful EVP aligns an individual’s values with the organisation's values. It reflects how the workplace facilitates personal and professional growth, offers recognition, and fosters an environment where employees feel their potential is identified and nurtured. An exceptional EVP connects with employees on a deeper level, creating a fulfilling employee experience that drives both high engagement and workplace satisfaction.
Non-financial benefits to remember
A truly engaging EVP extends far beyond dollars and cents. It introduces a variety of non-financial benefits that show employees they’re valued and supported:
Growth opportunities – Ongoing career and professional development offerings.
Flexibility – Work environment benefits, such as flexible hours and remote working options.
Well-designed spaces – Creative, inspiring workspaces that make coming to work enjoyable.
Celebrated achievements – Recognition for both personal and professional milestones.
Connection and belonging – A strong sense of being part of a fulfilling workplace culture.
Tailored approaches for maximum impact
Everything I do at Unscripted HR is driven by one principle - there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Every workplace is unique. Your culture, people, and goals demand a customised approach to enhancing employee experience.
For instance, I’ve worked with organisations that implemented staff birthdays off as a workplace initiative, introduced pet-friendly office policies, or incorporated robust Employee Assistance Programs to support their team holistically. Recognition often takes centre stage - be it through storytelling in regular team meetings, celebrating wins, or offering small, meaningful rewards for contributions.
Whatever the approach, the focus is always on creating an atmosphere where people feel seen, valued, and supported.
Creative ways to enhance employee experience
One of my favourite ways to inject creativity into employee engagement is through applying concepts like the "love languages." This approach reframes how workplaces build connection, recognising that each person best experiences appreciation and recognition in different ways.
A quick guide to the five love languages (adapted for workplaces):
Physical touch – Always tread carefully here, but this could look like a celebratory handshake or high-five. Consent always comes first.
Words of affirmation – Specific, direct feedback, such as "I loved how you handled that situation with [client/project]," can go a long way.
Gifts – Small, thoughtful surprises. Think chocolates, flowers, or a handwritten note - these personal touches mean more than oversized gestures.
Acts of service – Help on a significant task or bringing someone a coffee during a busy period can deepen trust and team dynamics.
Quality time – Team lunches, offsite retreats, or one-on-one check-ins offer invaluable chances for meaningful connection.
These ideas aren’t just limited to surface-level gestures - they should align with your team’s culture, values, and preferences for real impact.
Breaking from the cookie-cutter mould
It’s easy to see why generic solutions (you know the ones) fail to create high-impact results. Real workplace transformation requires meaningful, tailored strategies that fit the dynamics of your workplace. The best initiatives not only align with your organisational needs but also adapt to the evolving preferences of your employees.
