Fostering workplace communication and connection in the workplace

Connection and belonging are core human needs. They don’t just contribute to personal wellbeing; they create vibrant, high-performing workplaces too. At work, a sense of connection builds a positive culture - think of the “work wife” concept that emerges when bonds happen naturally. But fostering connection doesn’t have to rest entirely on chance. HR professionals are in a unique position to encourage meaningful relationships in the workplace, building stronger teams and more resilient organisations.

Supporting HR professionals to build connection

One of the rewarding aspects of my work is helping HR professionals enhance connection within their own networks. HR roles, by their nature, can often feel isolating. The emotional energy HR leaders invest in supporting others is enormous, but there’s immense value in building a supportive network of like-minded professionals.

These professional communities not only ease isolation, but they also create opportunities to share challenges, successes, and practical advice. When HR leaders form these connections, they’re better positioned to foster the same sense of togetherness within their teams and organisations.

I love working with HR professionals to craft these avenues of connection—and the positive ripple effect is phenomenal. Better workplace culture, increased employee engagement, and thriving organisations are the result.

Implementing HR principles in smaller businesses

It’s important to remember that not all organisations have dedicated HR roles. For many small and mid-sized businesses, HR responsibilities are absorbed by business owners, CEOs, or team leaders.

If that’s you, don’t underestimate the impact you can make by applying fundamental HR principles. HR isn’t about ticking boxes; it’s about people. Simple, thoughtful steps designed to foster connection and alignment can have far-reaching benefits for your business, both culturally and operationally.

Customising connection strategies

When it comes to fostering connection at work, one size does not fit all. Every business, team, and culture is different, which is why taking a tailored approach is crucial.

Here are some practical strategies to nurture workplace connection.

1. Lead with trust

The tone of workplace connection starts at the top. Leadership style and executive presence dictate what’s possible—and connection requires trust. Employees who feel valued and respected by their leaders are much more likely to form positive, meaningful connections with their colleagues.

2. Hire for emotional intelligence

While technical skills are essential, don’t overlook the importance of emotional intelligence when hiring. Employees who can read the room, demonstrate empathy, and bring people together are invaluable in shaping and sustaining workplace culture.

A solid understanding of team members’ strengths and communication styles can magnify this even further, creating better collaboration across the board.

3. Perfect the induction

New hires' experience in their first few days will have a lasting impact on how connected they feel. Induction experiences that are warm, informative, and values-aligned set the tone for belonging. Whether it’s a buddy system, a values-rich on boarding playlist, or a team lunch, be intentional about welcoming your new recruits.

4. Create shared experiences

Opportunities for shared experiences help colleagues build rapport beyond their day-to-day roles. Some ideas include:

  • Forming cross-department committees or task forces.

  • Hosting group volunteering events in line with your company’s values.

  • Sending employees to conferences or networking events as a team.

  • Starting workplace social or fitness clubs, such as a running group on Strava.

5. Celebrate often

Celebrations, large or small -help create moments of connection and pride. Celebrate milestones, birthdays, project completions, and team wins. Some teams even build storytelling into their regular routines, sharing memories or personal insights during weekly meetings to deepen interpersonal connections.

The key is to be authentic and intentional. Think about what celebrations will most resonate with your team.

HR creativity in action

One of the joys of working in HR is the opportunity to get creative with fostering connection. A well-designed initiative doesn’t just support compliance or improve processes, it can breathe life into a workplace, leaving teams energised and motivated.

For business owners, leaders, or CEOs, this creativity can also come into play. When you understand the unique characteristics of your people, you can shape initiatives that complement their individuality while strengthening your organisation as a whole.

Connection is a business superpower

At the heart of every strong, high-performing organisation is connection. When employees feel a sense of belonging, they’re not just satisfied; they’re engaged and ready to contribute at their best.

It’s also a clear business advantage in today’s job market. Implementing thoughtful HR strategies that prioritise connection is key to reducing turnover, improving morale, and building loyalty.
